I blundered into this artist's opening while looking for Red Gate's new gallery in the 798 complex. Greeted like the prodigal son, given food, drinks AND an autographed copy of a huge, bilingual catalogue. It was only after wandering around what I thought was a group show by three or four artists I opened the catalogue and discovered it was all a major retrospective by one artist: - Qu Yan

When I asked Quran (through his wife) if he had been influenced by Magritte he seemed offended and said he never heard of him. This series of distorted Maoist images, freckled by tiny mobile phones is meticulous and exquisite. Meixin gets included in the image to indicate size - not just because she is pretty... okay?
