Mao's Restaurant

Capitalism is alive and well in urban China and because I return to the
same area each visit I get to see many small businesses come and go
.

Preparing for the opening: My friend Angel (Liao Yun) is from Hunnan - so was Chairman Mao. So Liao Yun is excited about a new restaurant serving Hunnan cuisine. The floral display is tradition for opening any new business. The name of the restaurant is also the name of Mao's favorite dish. The dude who looks like a cop parks cars. Dedicated to Mao (see bust), the restaurant is decorated with revolutionary posters and examples of his unique calligraphy. From across the street, outside the hospital for foreigners wit the smelly toilet I await the hordes.
Unfortunately the hordes never really came and a year later the restaurant had changed hands. A shame for such a bold venture. Meixin is half asleep because she has just worked a 12 hour, allnight shift - very common for hotel industry workers. But the very hot Hunnan food revives her (okay this is another day - and I think she is telling the waitress a joke). My favorite piece of China poses with revolutionary posters. The new owner dumped the Maoist decor.
