At the
Window
20 X 24 inch silver gelatin print.
Crabtree, August 1998
The idea was a mixture
of watching my cats sit impassively at this window for hours, Boucher's
Mademoiselle O'Murphy and one of those enigmatic figures from
Magritte in the background.
I wanted the image to
be largely timeless, which I think happens, but everyone has trouble
with the male figure. I WANTED him to be stiff and aloof and not aware
of being watched. It's the Patriarchy ignoring the feminine, intellect
versus intuition, art versus science..... whatever you like. But please
don't ask me again 'why doesn't he look at her?'
